Le personnage est dans le monde normal et habituel. Il y a beaucoup de profondeur. Il arrive de face en marchant tout droit dans le chemin marqué.
The character is in the ordinary, familiar world. The shot has great depth. He walks straight towards us on the track that is marked out for him.

Le personnage quitte le cadre en laissant la vie se dérouler normalement derrière lui. Par son sweat rouge, il tranche sur les couleurs grises du fond.
The character moves out of the frame, leaving life to carry on as normal behind him. His red sweatshirt contrasts sharply with the greys of the background.

L'arrivée du tram qui coupe la profondeur ferme en même temps la porte sur la vie que le personnage a laissée derrière lui. The arrival of the tram which cuts across the background and forshortens the shot, also closes the door on the life that the character has left behind him.

On a changé de point de vue. On suit maintenant le personnage de dos et d'un point haut. C'est comme si il avançait d'un pas décidé sur un échiquier aux perpectives étranges.
We have changed viewpoint. Now we are following the character from above and behind. It's as if he is moving forward decisively on a chessboard with a bizarre pattern.

On a ici la sensation que le personnage se dissout dans l'échiquier.
Here we are under the impression that the character is dissolving into the chessboard.

La sculpture présente un fond noir homogène mais ménage aussi des espaces par lesquels on peut avoir des fenêtres sur ce qui se passe dans le fond, derrière le personnage et qui est beaucoup plus éclairé.
The sculpture provides us with a homogeneous black background and at the same time creates spaces - windows on the action taking place behind the character where there is much more light.

Si le personnage est cadré sur le fond noir de la sculpture, il présente un très fort contraste du fait des couleurs de son visage et de son vêtement.

If the figure is filmed against the black background of the sculpture, a very strong contrast is produced by the colours of his face and clothes.

Nous avons voulu ici marquer un changement en brisant les lignes.
Here we wanted to indicate a change by breaking up the straight lines.

Le personnage, relativement fixe, est alors pris entre deux plans : devant, le flux des voitures et derrière lui, un fond fermé difficile à identifier.

The character, comparatively immobile, finds himself caught between two decors: in the foreground, a steady stream of cars and behind him, a background that gives little away and is difficult to identify.

Les effets de transparence obtenus à travers les vitres par le passage des trams accentuent l'effet de fuite : le personnage s'échappe.

The transparent effects produced by the passage of trams as we look through the windows accentuates the impression of flight: the character is escaping.

Le personnage est fixe. C'est le décor qui défile derrière lui.
The character is immobile. The decor flashes by behind him.

Plus le trajet se poursuit, plus la lumière est forte et semble manger le fond, isolant le personnage toujours visible du monde qui l'entoure.
As the journey progresses, the light becomes stronger and appears to swallow up the background, isolating the character, who is still visible, from his surroundings.

Le fond a complètement disparu. Nous restons seuls avec le personnage.
The background has completely disappeared. We are alone with the character.

Nous retrouvons le personnage dans une salle de cinéma où il se confond avec les teintes noir et rouge.

Au tournage, le personnage restait fixe. Nous avons alors joué avec le fond noir ainsi qu'avec les espaces qui nous ont servi de fenêtres sur le monde en mouvement autour de personnage.

During the shooting of the film, the character remained immobile. So we used the black backdrop and the spaces inbetween to create windows on a world in movement around the character.

A ce moment, nous avons essayé de repérer la bonne distance entre le personnage à filmer et la caméra de manière à réaliser notre idée de rapport grand/petit.
Il a aussi fallu faire des règlages et utiliser un parapluie au dessus de la caméra pour limiter le surplus de lumière qui provoquait un contre jour.

Here we were trying to calculate the optimum distance between the character and the camera in order to illustrate our idea of the relationship between "big/small". It was also necessary to make adjustments and place an umbrella above the camera so as to reduce the strong backlighting.

Au moment du tournage, le choix du rouge pour habiller le personnage permet de le faire ressortir du fond par contraste. Même si le bâtiment le domine par la taille, la couleur vive fait qu'on ne le perd pas.

While shooting, the choice of red for the character's clothes provides contrast against the darker background. Even though the building dominates by its very size, the bright colour ensures that the character stands out.

Dans l'exercice final, notre personnage se déplace pour quitter son espace de vie proche afin de gagner une salle de cinéma. Il laisse derrière lui le commun de la vie de tous les jours pour atteindre, au cinéma, l'extraordinaire de l'aventure des héros du film.

A l'image, le rapport figure/fond épouse cette évolution et cette transformation. Les premiers lieux retenus reflètent la normalité du monde habituel d'où part le personnage : les lignes sont droites et les perspectives dégagées.

In the final exercise, the character leaves his immediate surroundings to go to the cinema. He leaves behind him the banality of every day life to experience, in the cinema, the extraordinary world of adventure as lived by cinematic heroes.

In the picture, the relationship between character and background demonstrates this evolution and transformation. The places chosen for the first scenes reflect the normality of the familiar world from where the character sets off: the lines are straight and the perspective clear.

On voit bien que le fond est flou et qu'il y a beaucoup de profondeur. La trousse dit beaucoup sur le personnage de gauche. La trousse symbolise la vie du personnage. Si on ne réussi pas à l'école, on ne réussi pas dans la vie.

We can see that the background is out of focus and that there is a lot of depth. The pencil case says a great deal about the figure on the left. It symboloises the life of this person: if you don't succeed at school, you won't succeed in life.
